If you have heard about ketamine therapy for depression, you may have one immediate question: How is it different from the treatments I already know about?
The most familiar approaches to depression care are psychotherapy, antidepressant medication, or a combination of the two. Ketamine-based treatment is another option that may be considered in certain circumstances, particularly when previous treatments have not provided enough relief.
The differences go beyond how quickly someone might notice a change. Ketamine-based treatment works through a different biological pathway and involves supervised treatment visits. Understanding those distinctions can help you have a more informed conversation with a psychiatric provider.
How Do Traditional Depression Treatments Work?
Psychotherapy gives you a place to explore what you are experiencing and develop ways to respond to thoughts, emotions, and circumstances that may be affecting your mental health. Antidepressant medication works through biological pathways involved in mood, and it often takes several weeks to assess its fuller effect.
Neither approach is a single, standard plan for everyone. A provider may recommend therapy, medication, or both based on your symptoms, history, preferences, and response to past care.
Ketamine-based treatment does not make those approaches obsolete. For some people, it may be considered alongside other forms of care when depression remains difficult to treat.
What Makes Ketamine-Based Treatment Different?
Many commonly prescribed antidepressants primarily affect serotonin, norepinephrine, or related pathways. Ketamine acts through a different system involving glutamate, a chemical messenger in the brain.
Another difference is timing. Some people receiving ketamine-based treatment notice a change in depressive symptoms sooner than they would with a traditional antidepressant. That possibility has attracted a great deal of attention, but a faster response is not guaranteed, and one treatment visit is not necessarily the end of someone’s care.
There is also a practical difference: ketamine-based treatments take place as planned clinical visits with screening and monitoring. They require more time at the clinic than taking a daily medication at home.
Are Ketamine and Spravato the Same Thing?
They are related, but the names are not interchangeable.
Spravato is the brand name for esketamine, a prescription nasal spray that is FDA-approved for adults with treatment-resistant depression. It must be administered under the supervision of a healthcare provider, with monitoring afterward. Ketamine itself may be provided through a separate clinical protocol. The two options can differ in how they are administered, their regulatory status, and insurance coverage.
At Meah Modern Psychiatry, we offer an insurance-covered Spravato option and a separate cash-pay ketamine protocol. A consultation helps clarify which, if either, may be appropriate for an individual patient.
Why Does Treatment Take Place in a Clinical Setting?
A ketamine-based treatment visit includes more than receiving a medication. The care team needs to review your health history and monitor you for possible effects during and after treatment.
For Spravato, the FDA requires administration under healthcare supervision and an observation period after each dose. Possible effects include changes in perception, sedation, and a temporary increase in blood pressure. These requirements are one reason it is important to discuss the full treatment process, not just the potential benefits, when comparing your options.
Does Ketamine Replace Therapy or Other Depression Care?
That depends on the person and the treatment plan. Some patients continue psychotherapy or other psychiatric care while receiving ketamine-based treatment. Your provider may also discuss how progress will be evaluated and what follow-up care could look like.
If you are curious about ketamine therapy, you do not need to decide in advance that it is the right choice. A more useful starting point is to explain what you have tried, what has or has not helped, and what questions you have about the available options.
At Meah Modern Psychiatry, our team offers ketamine therapy in Colorado Springs as part of a broader approach to mental health care.
